Skype Interview Tips

Tips from Enayetur Raheem (Data scientist, Carolinas HeathCare Saystem):
Here's how you can prepare fora telephone/Skype interview.
1) Prepare to speak "about yourself" for a minute or so. Talk about your academic activities after college (i.e., from the university and above).
2) Mention any significant or notable achievement. For example, top student in class, any medals, any publication, conference attendance, etc.
3) Mention something about your past and current research activities. Leave an impression that you are research-minded and you would like to continue research in area "A" or whatever is appropriate.
4) Do mention that you have interest in a particular area or areas and give a specific example of a research topic that falls under the professor's research field. Avoid being too pushy. Do not only say "I am very interested to work with you"-type statement. If you say so, say why you are interested immediately.
5) Be familiar with the professor's work, recent publications, lab environment, etc.
6) If opportunity comes, ask the most relevant question
7) When opportunity comes, mention any of the professor's work that matches directly with your previous work.
8) Lastly, don't be nervous. Practice what you are going to say. Say it slowly and steadily but naturally.
9) After giving an answer, you might want to ask if the professor have heard your answer. You can ask something like this: "Did I answer your question?"
10) Do not ask like this: "Did you understand my answer?". The the word "understand" is not a polite word, especially in telephone conversation.
This is not very organized or not in any order but at lest will get you started.

I had an interview with a professor; from my experience i can say that he will ask about what have you done in your undergrad. If you did something related to Matlab simulation then he will ask you what you did and how you did. He might ask you some basic things. He will also ask you what's your plan, what do you want to do after your MS/PHD....then s/he will talk about his/her own research.....and will try to relate your experience that might be helpful for your future work. And, finally s/he will ask you "Do you have any questions?" Never end up with No. Ask something.....

They should not ask you every details of the field you are supposed to work on, however, you must have a clear 'overall' idea.
At the end, they may ask, do you have any questions for us? You should ask a few questions that express your interest in the program and in their university. Feel free to questions like: how many international intake you have every year? What are the graduates of this program doing in general/what is the common job field? How do you think hiring me as graduate student will benefit your lab and your research? Bla bla bla....

গতকাল আমাকে একজন প্রশ্ন করেছিলেন যে প্রফেসরের সঙ্গে ইন্টারভিউ আছে, প্রফেসর তাঁকে বলেছেন তাঁর কোন প্রশ্ন থাকলে যেন করেন সেই ইন্টারভিউতে। তিনি প্রশ্নগুলো গ্রুপে করেছিলেন, তবে সাড়া পাননি। আমি গ্রুপে মোটেও একটিভ না বিভিন্ন কারণে, আর আমার মনে হয় আজকাল এই বিষয়ে আমার আর সাহায্য না করলেও চলে, কারণ অনেকেই এখন বিষয়গুলো জানেন এবং প্রসপেক্টিভ স্টুডেন্টদের হেল্প করেন। তবু উনাকে আমি প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দিলাম অতি দ্রুত (চুলায় রান্না করতে করতে ভয়েস কীবোর্ডে ভয়েস-টু-টেক্সট করে করে)। পরে মনে হল উত্তরটা এখানে শেয়ার করে রাখি, যদি কারও সাহসায্য হয়। রিসেন্ট কন্ট্রিবিউটর যাঁরা আছেন, তাঁরা চাইলে এটার সঙ্গে কিছু যুক্ত করে মূল ফাইলে আপডেট করে রাখতে পারেন।
প্রফেসরকে প্রশ্ন করার আগে উনার প্রোফাইলটা একটু ঘাঁটাঘাঁটি করতে হবে।
১। দেখতে হবে উনি গত তিন/চার বছরে কী টপিকের উপর পাবলিকেশন করেছেন?
২। দেখতে হবে উনার সুপারভিশনে রিসেন্ট যাঁরা ছাত্র ছিলেন তাঁরা থিসিস কী নিয়ে করেছেন?
৩। তিন/চার বছরের আগে বছর দশেক উনি কী করেছেন?
৪। উনার রিসার্চ ইন্টারেস্টের মাঝে কী কী লেখা আছে?
তারপর উনাকে এইরকম কিছু প্রশ্ন করা যেতে পারেঃ
১। আমি দেখলাম তুমি আগে ক নিয়ে কাজ করতে, এখন দেখলাম রিসেন্টলি খ নিয়ে কাজ করছ। কেন এটা করেছ? ক এর সমস্যা কী ছিল? খ এর সুবিধাই বা কী? কেন তুমি টপিক চেঞ্জ করে এখানে আসলে?
২। আমি আসলে আমাকেও কি ক নিয়েই কাজ করতে হবে? যদি হয় তাহলে তোমার ওভারঅল প্ল্যানটা কী? তুমি ক নিয়ে কী করতে চাও শেষপর্যন্ত? আমার কাছে ঠিক কোন জায়গাটাতে কন্ট্রিবিউশন এক্সপেক্ট করছ?
৩। ক টপিকের আগামী বছর দশেকে ভবিষ্যৎ কী? তুমি কীভাবে দেখছ ভবিষ্যৎটা? আমি এটা নিয়ে কাজ করলে এই ফিল্ডে চাকরি বাকরি পাব কোথায়? তোমার রিসেন্ট স্টুডেন্টরা কোথায় কাজ করছে?
৪। তোমাদের রিসার্চ গ্রুপে বর্তমানে কয়জন প্রফেসর আছেন? কয়জন গ্র্যাড স্টুডেন্ট? তাঁরা কী নিয়ে কাজ করছেন?
৫। তুমি কেন মনে কর যে আমার ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড ক টপিক নিয়ে কাজ করার জন্যে ভাল হবে? যেহেতু আমার এই বিষয়ে কোন পূর্ব অভিজ্ঞতা নেই।
৬। ফান্ডিং কীভাবে পাব আমি? তুমি আমাকে কত দিবে? ইউনিভার্সিটি কত দিবে? আমাকে কত টিউশন দিতে হবে? আমি হাতে কত টাকা পাব সবশেষে? এই সিটিতে কি এই টাকা দিয়ে মোটামুটি চলা যায় একজন স্টুডেন্ট এর?
৭। তোমার ফান্ডিং এর সোর্স কী? সরকারি/বেসরকারি কোম্পানি/সংস্থা কারা ফান্ডিং করছে তোমার প্রজেক্ট?
৮। তোমার ইন্ডাস্ট্রি কোলাবোরশেন কেমন? আমার কি কোন কোম্পানির সঙ্গে কাজ করার সুযোগ আছে? সেক্ষেত্রে হয়তো আমার ফিউচার ক্যারিয়ারটা একটু ইজি হয়।
ইত্যাদি। এরকম আসলে অনেক প্রশ্ন করা যায়, তবে আমার মনে হয় গোটা দশেক প্রশ্নের চেয়ে বেশি প্রশ্ন করা ঠিক হবে না। সময় একটা ফ্যাক্টর এবং অতিরিক্ত প্রশ্ন একজনকে বিরক্ত করতে পারে।

Nothing serious... prof will just try to understand that the what u have done and if u have minimum basic on what you are going to study.l, obviously don't need to show that you know everything... he wants to see that how devoted u are to learn something new related to your background.... and another thing is that you will be mainly judged by your academic background but prof will also see how easy the communication between you and your prof will be....sometimes profs face difficulties with language of the students...

For my Skype Interview, I prepared around 10 days studying papers, books, and topics related to my research topic but interestingly Professor asked questions from my undergraduate first-year course no. 101, second-year course no. 205 and a third-year course no 305. So, it is always better to have a good understanding on basic topics.

Few questions are pretty obvious like tell me about your background, what r u doing now, what research experience do u have etc. So be prepare for such common question. If you have any publication then be prepare to explain how you came up with the research idea n what method u followed... Finally prof may ask what is your research plan under him. Which area interests you n why and how do u want to pursue the research.... Try to ask question about his mentoring style, lab facilities, required skills etc....
